As J.N. Forkel reports ("On Johann Sebastian Bach's Life, Art, and Works of Art, 1802) the title "English Suites" derives from the fact that they are supposed to have been written by Bach for a noble Englishman.
This information is backed solely by the remark "Fait pour les Anglois" on the title-page of the A-major Suite in the manuscript C (see report of revision). Not until after Bach's death, the expression "English Suites" has gradually spread.
