The Johan Herman Berens Swedish composer and pianist of German origin, was born in Hamburg on April 7th 182 and died on 9 May in Stockholm. Having apprenticed with his father Karl Berens, who was flutist and composer, and with REISSIGER and CZERNY, settled in Sweden in 1847.

There he played in chamber music concerts in Stockholm, while he was director of the orchestra OEREBRO basilica between 1848-1860. He returned to Stockholm in 1860 to become music director in Mindre Theatre and Dramatic Theater. In 1861 he was appointed teacher composition and orchestration at the Conservatoire in Stockholm and obtained a professor title in 1868. He was also a piano teacher of Queen Lovisa.

His compositions include the opera Violetta, the Greek Kodro, various Overture, chamber music pieces, piano and studies including works: "NEUESTE SCHULE DER GELAEUFIGKEIT, OP.61" (School of Velocity, op.61) and "PFLEGE DER LINKEN HAND, op.89" (Practice of the left hand, op.89)
